Copyediting

Bibliography

I copyedited and indexed Janet Conway et al’s Cross-Border Solidarities and Dr Gail Gazelle’s Mindful MD

I copyedited Chapter 10 of Volume 4 in this anthology: “Towards a World History,” by Claudia Jarzebowski.

I was the (and then a) copyeditor for Inkitt’s reading app, Galatea. I really only worked on a small selection of what’s currently available on the app—which has exploded—but I worked on over 40 books published there, including My Sexy Stepbrother is a Werebear, Seeing Scarlett, Riders of Tyr, Gideon, as well as some of the sequels to the original Galatea stories: Millennium Wolves, My Cowboy, Requiem City, Her Possessive Guard, and Beautiful Mistake, to name a few. If you want to check out the app, be warned that most content is 18+.

I also have 4+ years experience proofreading and digitizing medical documents at Think Research, a Canadian health tech company that provides medical order sets and the software to use them digitally.

I have also done smaller personal projects for other clients. For example, I was the un/official copyeditor for my dad’s work blog (for posts on March 26, May 16, and Sept 20 2018).

Education

I have taken the copyediting, proofreading, indexing, and a few other courses for the Publishing Certificate at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Chang School of Continuing Studies. I haven’t finished the certificate because I got a job.

I have a MA in Library and Information Science from Simmons College and a BA in English Lit from the University of Toronto.

Style Guides

I created the first style guide for Galatea stories, later improved upon by my partner-in-editing, Dana, and subsequent editors at the company.

I have extensive experience with Chicago Manual of Style and APA Style.

Experience and Personal Style

I have experience with light, medium, and heavy-handed copyediting, substantive editing, proofreading, and helping non-native English speakers polish their English-language publications. I also love the fiddly work of editing bibliographies. Honestly I should’ve known I woud be a copy editor when I realized my favourite part of writing papers in university was when I got to edit the reference list at the end.

The crux of copyediting is consistency, so in all decisions the client is the authority, and then I maintain that decision throughout the text.

I have zero stake in whether you should use Oxford commas or not. My personal feelings are that whenever anyone says “Oxford Comma” I start singing the Vampire Weekend song in my head, but I can never remember all the words so I have to immediately listen to it again. I’m listening to it right now, is what I’m saying.

Rates

I am happy to negotiate with you on rates; what works for you and your project works for me!

That being said, my rates range 0.02 – 0.035 CAD per word, depending on complexity.
